The Connection Between Atrial Septal Defects and Cleft Palate
There is no singular cause for atrial septal defects (ASDs) and cleft palates. However, there are indications that congenital birth defects of the heart can be related in some cases to cases of cleft palate. Other types of heart defects that might also be present with a cleft palate include ventricular septal defects and cardiovascular abnormalities in structure and function.
Atrial Septal Defects
Atrial septal defects are more likely to affect girls than boys, and have no single known cause. The left atria is supposed to be separated from the right atria by the septum, a thin wall between the upper chambers. However, in atrial septal defects (ASD), this wall has a hole that lets blood pass from one chamber to the other. This makes the heart work overtime and cause damage to both the cardiac muscle and eventually the lungs, which have to deal with an increase in blood flow.
• ASD is sometimes diagnosed at birth if other defects are present, such as cleft palate, or if the symptoms are significant.
• It is not uncommon for ASD to go undiagnosed until adulthood, after the years of added stress on the heart and lungs cause health problems, and in turn more noticeable symptoms.
• ASD might only need monitoring, but some patients require treatment through cardiac catheterization or open heart surgery.
Cleft Palate Defects
The palate refers to the roof of the mouth, including both the hard (forward) and soft (rear) sections. A cleft in this structure is an opening or a gap. This interferes with the ability to nurse or bottle feed as it makes sucking difficult if not impossible. Cleft palates can also interfere with breathing and speech development. It is not uncommon for cleft palates to also be related to hearing loss, as the cleft extends internally to affect the tubes in the ear canals.
• Cleft palates might be found during routine ultrasounds in pregnancy, especially if a cleft lip is also present.
• Surgical repair for cleft palate is usually best done when the child is approximately 12 to 18 months of age.

While the exact connection between these two types of birth defects is not precisely clear, evidence does show that have a cleft palate increase the risk of a congenital heart defect by as much as 10 times.
