Types of Atrial Septal Defects
Atrial septal defects (ASDs) affect the wall between the heart chambers, and there are four basic types of this congenital heart problems. These different types of the defect are determined by their severity, location, and disruption of cardiac and pulmonary functions.
Type 1: Ostium Secundum
Ostium Secundum Atrial Septal Defect is the most prevalent type of the cardiac problem. Approximately 65 percent of people who have ASD have this type. In this form of the defect, the septum develops in the heart, but a hole remains even after birth that interferes with typical, healthy blood flow. Usually the wall is sealed and blood can’t cross from the left atria to the right atria. But with Ostium Secundum, the hole lets this blood move to the right atria and then into the lungs. Since the blood in the left atria already has oxygen in it, it overloads the right atria and lungs.
Type 2: Ostium Primum
Ostium Primum is the second most prevalent form of ASD. It affects the leaflets of the mitral valve by leaving a cleft or notch. This is generally considered a defect of the atrioventricular system.
Type 3: Sinus Venosus
In Sinus Venosus defects the area where the superior vena cava meets the right atrium there is a defect. The pulmonary veins do not flow to the right chambers because of structural abnormalities.
Type 4: Coronary Sinus
Coronary Sinus defects are rare. The wall of the coronary sinus located behind the left chamber is affected.
The larger the defects are, the more danger they pose over time. For all of these types of atrial septal defects, the symptoms of can be similar. These include symptoms such as heart murmurs, high blood pressure, lung infections, and possibly pulmonary hypertension.
Tests for ASD are often performed when the above symptoms are noted might be one or more of the following:
• Echocardiogram (echo) – Uses sound waves to create pictures of the heart, helping doctors assess heart structures and functions.
• Electrocardiogram (ECG) – Measures electrical pulses of the heart to asses heart murmurs and pumping abilities.

Treatment for ASDs of various types usually involve either catheters inserted in through the groin and up to the heart or open heart surgery. There are no medications to treat ASDs, but sometimes blood thinners are used to prevent blood clots or antibiotics are used to prevent infections of the heart during dental work.
