Cleft lip is a facial malformation that occurs during pregnancy. It is caused by a lack of tissue in the lip area that makes it impossible for the two separate pieces of the upper lip to join together. This creates a gap in the lip and mouth area. Clefting is a physical development issue. Some people might be familiar with the term “harelip,” which is no longer considered an appropriate moniker for the abnormality.
Cleft lip often occurs in conjunction with cleft palate, which is a failure of the tissue in the mouth to join together. The gap or separation extends from inside on the roof of the mouth to the upper lip and nose area. The gap can also include the bones of the upper jaw or gums. The problem can occur on just one side of the mouth or on both sides.
Cleft Lift is Common
According to recent data, approximately 700 babies per year in the United States are affected by cleft lip and/or cleft palate. It is considered the fourth most common birth defect in the country. Babies of Native American, Asian, and Latino descent tend to be more prone to the malformation.
Researchers have been unable to identify a definitive cause of cleft lip. Some believe it is a combination of both environmental and genetic factors. There appears to be a higher incidence of cleft lip within families that have experienced the abnormality before, but because certain medical treatments play a role in the development of the fetus, there is some concern environmental factors could also be at least partly to blame. In addition to some medications, there might be a connection between cleft lip and exposure to certain chemicals, or illness issues for the mother during pregnancy.
Secondary Health Concerns
Many cases of cleft lip are diagnosed in utero because it is so obvious to see the baby’s lip has not formed correctly. Cleft palate can be slightly more difficult to diagnose because it occurs inside of the mouth. Babies with cleft lift can experience a variety of health concerns, including difficulty eating, speech problems, and dental problems. In some cases, more so for those with a combination of cleft lip and cleft palate, there can also be issues with hearing loss and ear infections. Chances are a baby or child with cleft lip will frequently see a variety of medical specialists to manage the associated medical problems, while simultaneously undergoing treatment for repair for clefting, which can take more than a decade.
