FAQ

Cleft palate is one of the most common birth defects in the United States. Though it can be disturbing to give birth to a child with a cleft palate, the problem can be fixed. It takes some time and patience, but the majority of children born with palate issues go on to lead healthy, happy lives.

Symptoms

The symptoms of cleft palate include a gap in the roof of the mouth. This gap can extend throughout the soft and hard palate depending on the severity of the condition. There can also be issues with nasal passages and children might experience hearing loss and ear infections. In many cases, the gum line and teeth are also affected. If the condition occurs in conjunction with cleft lip there will also be a visible gap in the upper lip.

Causes

The causes of cleft palate are not entirely clear, though most doctors agree it is a combination of factors that occur together and trigger clefting. A genetic component can make a child susceptible to clefting and then environmental factors lead to developmental problems. For instance, a baby who is genetically predisposed to clefting that has a mother who smokes or uses alcohol or drugs during pregnancy has a high risk of developing a cleft. That said, there have been instances in which clefting was unpredictable. There may have been no known genetic component and the mother made healthy choices during pregnancy, yet clefting still occurred.

If you believe your child might be at risk for clefting, it is important you speak with your doctor about the risk. Genetic counseling is available to help parents learn all they can about the abnormality.

Treatment

Treatment for cleft palate almost always includes surgery. The average child with a cleft palate will undergo more than one surgery before adolescence to correct the issue. A medical team is assembled as soon as the cleft is diagnosed. Once the baby’s immediate needs are met, the team can create a long-term treatment plan.

Children typically undergo cleft palate surgery within a few months of their first birthday. There will also be evaluations from dentists, orthodontists, speech pathologists, and psychologists. Most cases also involve the support of an ear, nose, and throat specialist because many children with cleft palate experience hearing loss and ear infections. The goal is to address not only the cleft, but all of the medical issues that could be related to the abnormality. Bone graft surgery is often necessary later in childhood to repair any problems with the gum line and allow for the placement of natural adult teeth or prosthetic devices.
