FAQ

Cleft lip is one of the most common developmental abnormalities in babies in the United States. About one in every 700 babies are born with some kind of cleft. Though it can be unnerving to learn your child has a cleft, it is something that often looks worse than it is. This is due in part to the fact that cleft lip is correctible, given the appropriate amount of time and patience. It is also possible for a child with a cleft lip to lead an otherwise healthy and happy life.

Symptoms

The symptoms associated with cleft lip include a gap in the upper lip. This gap can affect either or both sides of the mouth, as well as the area below the nose and the teeth and gum line. Babies with a cleft can experience problems with eating and speaking, and since the abnormality often occurs concurrently with a cleft palate, there can be additional problems with hearing and ear infections.

Causes

The causes of cleft lip are unknown but a variety of risk factors have been identified. Researchers agree there is a genetic factor involved because babies born in a family with a previous incidence of cleft lip occur at a higher rate. There also seems to be a race component involved, as Asian and Native American babies tend to have a higher incidence of cleft lip.

Environmental factors are also at play. Mothers can reduce the risk for cleft lip even if there are genetic risks by not smoking, drinking, or using drugs during pregnancy. It is also important that women carefully review risk factors with doctors when a prescription medication is offered.

Treatment

Cleft lip is treatable, but it takes a while for treatment to be completely effective. A treatment plan is created the moment a child is diagnosed, which could be as early as three months in utero. The immediate concern is for the child to be able to breathe without problems and get the nutrition he or she needs. If a baby struggles to feed properly it can lead to serious problems down the road.

Once a newborn’s basic needs are met, parents consult with a team of medical specialists to plan for the future. Surgery is usually scheduled before the child turns one. In some cases, this is enough to correct the cleft, though follow-up visits with dentists, orthodontists, speech pathologists, and psychologists can be helpful for dealing with a variety of challenges the child could face in the future.
