FAQ

Breastfeeding can be one of the most frustrating challenges of early motherhood, but once the wrinkles are ironed out it is one of the most rewarding experiences for both mother and child. It is the best way to ensure a newborn receives proper nutrition, and that mother and baby bond as they should. Unfortunately, when a child is born with cleft lip, the challenges of early breastfeeding are magnified and the learning process very frustrating. It is possible for a baby with a cleft lip to breastfeed, but it requires patience and guidance.

Making Adjustments

Any new mother who has a desire to breastfeed can work with a lactation specialist immediately after labor. This breastfeeding provides guidance regarding positioning, as well as direction for caring for her own body and milk supply.

There is also evidence that new mothers benefit from peer support. If available, a woman who has breastfed a baby with cleft lip or another related abnormality can provide guidance, comfort, and encouragement. Even if breastfeeding is not ultimately an option, bonding with another mother who shared similar struggles can be extremely beneficial.

In many instances, minor adjustments make breastfeeding an infant with cleft lip possible. Positioning of the child can be altered from the so-called normal feeding position to accommodate the gap. Sometimes allowing the baby to straddle the mother face-forward against the breast provides the pressure needed to form the bond. This also reduces problems with nasal regurgitation because the baby is in a more upright position. The “football hold” can also be effective. Additionally, so mothers successfully use their thumb or fingers to block the gap and allow for appropriate suction.

Priorities over Rules

New mothers should be encouraged to try alternatives to see if anything works for them and their babies. They should be reminded there are really no rules for breastfeeding and the most important thing is to ensure their child receives the proper nutrition, no matter how that occurs.

Doctors should also include new mothers in the monitoring process. A mother unable to breastfeed her child can feel empowered by her awareness of her child’s needs. Despite not engaging in the act of breastfeeding, she can track her child’s nutrition and still feel in charge of the feeding process.

If breastfeeding is impossible due to the abnormality, a new mother should not feel as if she has failed. It is still possible to provide breast milk to her baby, even if it is not under the perfect conditions. She should still feel confident and capable of caring for her new child.
