An atrial septal defect occurs when the heart does not form properly in utero and there is a hole in a place where there should be none. It can trigger problems throughout a person’s life, especially if the hole is undiagnosed and heart and lung function suffer.

The symptoms associated with atrial septal defect vary from case to case and on the size of the hole. There are young babies with small holes that never show any signs of a problem. The holes repair themselves within a few years and the children go on to live happy, healthy lives, never aware there was a problem.

When the hole in the heart is larger and goes untreated, a variety of symptoms can occur. In many cases, it is these symptoms that lead to the diagnosis of atrial septal defects. A person might visit his or her doctor because of shortness of breath, swelling in the feet or legs, fatigue, or heart palpitations and discover a hole has been present since before birth. Other more severe symptoms of atrial septal defects include stroke, heart murmur, and frequent lung infections.

Doctors are not sure of the exact cause of atrial septal defects and most agree there is probably a combination of factors that can trigger the abnormality. There is a genetic component and if a person has a heart defect or has relatives with a heart defect, he or she is more likely to be the parent of a child with an issue.

In addition to uncontrollable genetics, things a mother does during her pregnancy might also play a role in the development of atrial septal defects. Babies with mothers who smoke cigarettes, use illicit drugs, or drink alcohol during pregnancy, especially early on, have a higher risk for this and other problems. There have also been instances in which a mother developed rubella during pregnancy and it led to the baby having an atrial septal defect.

Finally, there is some evidence that the use of certain prescription drugs could play a role. Make sure you understand all of the risks involved if you take anything during pregnancy, even if it is something suggested by your doctor.

It is possible to treat atrial septal defects with medication, surgery, and various supportive therapies. Much of the treatment plan is determined by the size of the hole and the degree of severity the problem has reached. If a person has experienced severe consequences from atrial defects, those issues might be addressed before further treatment options can be explored
